Part One

Review by whittaker96 (Town of Odyssey)

Whoa...this was even bigger than the reveal of the Stiletto...and just like that reveal, it was executed perfectly. A good plot twist has to be both surprising and logical, and Mitch's return makes perfect sense to come back now...and his circumstances for coming back were certainly surprising. It was even foreshadowed throughout the episode, as Connie reminisced on her almost wedding when wearing the dress. Will Mitch and his fiance break up, or will Connie have to start anew looking for a new boyfriend? Seven days seems way too long.

Katie Leigh was wonderful as Connie in this episode, although screaming "MITCH!" was a bit much. Actually, I enjoyed everyone's performances in this episode, except for Wooton. What happened to his sense of morality when he tried to take advantage of the mishap by taking all the food offered to him? That was the part that I didn't appreciate. And I thought "I missed the emoticons" was insensitive after Connie shared about her almost Mitch wedding. Wooton has yet to impress me or make me laugh since before the hiatus, although Hamsammich sounded ADORABLE.

Matthew and Emily's mystery was surprisingly enjoyable, and their scenes with Penny reminded me of Harlow Doyle type shows. In fact, it's my favorite ME episode since Green Ring Conspiracy: Part 1. The mystery was really entertaining, and the banter between them was hilarious. Looking forward to the conclusion!

Bob Hoose department security cameo...

I wonder if the connection between the two stories will be that the C.G. is Mitch and "Jessica Brown" is his fiance...

Mr. Fishbine from the jewelry store? Gifts for Madge and Guy?

I want Penny's mother to appear on the show after hearing her voice for two seconds...

Loved Connie talking about calls from her mother and George Barclay. One of the funniest parts of the show. "He said I need counseling." "Premarital?" "No, actual counseling, he thinks I'm crazy for marrying Wooton." June Kendall, come back!

Speaking of Penny, she's grown on me and now I think she's a great addition to the cast, as long as sheand Wooton don't get together.

I think that if they bring Wooton back to pre-hiatus Wooton, and make Hand Up not disappear out of the blue, all the awkward changes will go away and Odyssey will return to a world with no holes! But Album 55 was a fantastic album, and my favorite since Album 49!

All I can think is WOW! I was totally surprised with the end of this episode. I just could not believe that I was hearing Mitch. At first I did not believe that it was supposed to be Mitch. It was not until Connie yelled "Mitch" that I was totally convinced that it was actually him. I was so excited to get to hear him again!!!

I enjoyed this episode up until the end, then it was ruined by the arrival of Mitch. I am still holding out for Jason and Connie to eventually wind up together. I do not see how any good can come of Mitch being back, though I did enjoy the foreshadowing of the entire episode. makes me want to go back and listen to Something Blue again. I think Connie does need to get married and face some adult issues. With Eugene and Katrina facing the challenge of infertility and dealing with such hard things, it does not seem fair to keep holding Connie back. I would much have preferred that Jason show up when he gets her "annoucement" and try to talk her out of it. I am actually liking Wooton more since the relaunch, well, maybe not the Broken Pencil Show, but otherwise he has been both interesting AND entertaining. I liked the comment about the emoticons. I just cannot get into the whole Matthew Parker/Emily Jones detective agency thing, guess I am too old (though I LOVED The Last Chance Detectives) When I first looked at whitsend.org, it almost seemed like they were playing both halves this weekend. THat would have been awesome for those of us who do not own the album yet. It is not available for purchase until June in Europe.

I was glad to here the return of Mitch. I've been waiting for him to come back since I was about... 11. At 19 now, I'd say I've been waiting for too long for his 'two year' Budapest term to end. I fully expected him to return exactly two years later, so like, Album 45? Never happened. After relaunch, I gave up hope. This should be interesting. I'm surprised how many people are disappointed by this, after I've spent the last however many years reading, "Bring Back Mitch!!!!!!" on every single podcast comment page.

I'm glad he's engaged to someone else though. If Connie is going to get married, it shouldn't be to Mitch. It'll be good to hear from him and get closure, but I don't think he should stick around and marry Connie or anything.

Overall, the rest of the episode was pretty good. I'm still learning to like Penny. She's not bad, she just doesn't seem good enough for them to keep around. Oh well. She doesn't bug me anymore at least. Matthew and Emily and Wooton were well used too. I still insist on going against popular opinion by liking Matthew and Emily's friendship. I actually like Emily's character just so long as she is with Matthew.

I like that Mitch is back, but I don't like that he's engaged to someone else. I don't think he should necessarily marry Connie. I wouldn't have minded if they brought him back and he and Connie were friends but nothing more. But I don't like the potential it has to destroy Connie (though, I guess that has a lot more to do with how the rest of the story is handled than anything else).

This is only the second or third time I've heard Matthew and Emily (I skipped a few episodes in the middle... but I'll get to them eventually) but every time they talk, I find myself tuning out and have to go back and re-listen to the scene. They're just not engaging--which is kind of how I feel about most of the new characters: just not engaging.

But, on the positive side, I LOVED the Wooton/Connie fake wedding plot line. I was entertained and even laughed a couple of times (which, I find, is pretty rare these days). I think, on the whole, my opinion of this episode will entirely depend on the second part.

I was planning on writing and posting this earlier in the week--preferably not the night before Something Old, Something New, Part II comes out--but if you know anything about me, you know that some of my worst traits are laziness and procrastination. So, like a true procrastinator, I've waited until just about the last minute to get this out. Since I'm not writing a formal review of Something Old, Something New, Part I, I did want to talk about what I think might happen in the next part before it is officially released.

As you could probably tell from my previous post, I was really excited that Mitch came back in last week's episode. I even expressed to friends of mine who don't know much about Odyssey at all my excitement. Hopefully all of my excitement won't give me an expectation that is too high for tomorrow's episode to meet.

My first prediction, which I think makes the most sense of anything I'm conjecturing, is that Mitch is back in town because of the allegedly illegal activity going on involving "Cute Guy" and "Maureen." Some have said that maybe Mitch and his fiancee are those two's true identities, which could be possible, since thus far only Matthew, Emily, and Penny have seen them. However, I think that's unlikely. It really seems like the mystery couple are doing something illegal with their paintings, so unless that impression is totally wrong, I don't think Mitch is involved in that.

A second thing I wanted to express was that although on the one hand, it would be nice and somewhat emotionally satisfying for Connie and Mitch to get back together, I don't want that to happen. For one thing, I don't think he's going to ditch his fiancee so quickly, even though we might hope that he would. And secondly, as I believe someone else has said, Mitch and Connie already determined that it was not God's will for them to get married. If, all of a sudden, God reveals to them that they are supposed to be together, it would not make a lot of sense to listeners who already have a hard time figuring out God's will and how all of the specifics of that should play out. If the relationship wasn't meant to be before, I don't think that should ever change, no matter how much we fans might want the two to be together.

My dad, on the other hand is a different story. He thinks that these two episodes are a setup for several episodes to come in Album 56 which will rebuild Mitch and Connie's relationship. I informed him that Paul Herlinger (wasn't it?) had said that they wouldn't get back together until Eugene and Katrina had kids, and that since it's obvious now that they can't have kids, Connie and Mitch won't ever get married. Therefore, he now thinks that not only will Connie and Mitch renew their relationship, but Eugene and Katrina, in tomorrow's episode, will receive the news that, despite all odds, by a miracle of God, they're expecting a baby. And so, he thinks, with that obstacle removed, the next logical step will be for Mitch to somehow dump his fiancee and marry Connie. I don't think he's right at all, but I thought I'd amuse you by sharing that.

So my expectations are high for tomorrow's episode, despite my fears that it may not be that great of a resolution. I hope there is a very satisfactory ending if this plot will not be carried on into Album 56. I don't really see how much can be fit into one small 25-minute time slot, but I'll hold out hope just the same.

Connie and Mitch's relationship/marriage dilemmas first aired when I was around 7/8. Obviously, I wanted a wedding and a happy ending at that time. I was crushed when it never came about. Since my middle school years, I have been happy that Connie did not end up with Mitch, because I became irritated with her silly behavior around him. However, after listening to the Novacom Saga again this last year (and with a little life experience) I realized how natural that kind of gidiness is for girls around the men they love. I've come to miss their witty banter and playful flirting. Besides, it is time for old Connie Kendall to settle down. She's been on the show for 25 years, darn it! ;x For those of you who argue that their relationship is not in God's will, remember that it's a fictional radio series. The writers can easily make it suddenly become God's will.

Part Two

Beautiful. Didn't love the ending, but the return of witty lines, Mitch, and Jacques Henri, along with the hilarious mystery-solving trio of Matthew, Penny, and Emily (reminded me of Harlow shows), heartbreaking performance from Connie, and wonderful scoring from John Campbell. The dialogue with Whit and Connie was one of my favorite Andre Stojka scenes, and Wooton did better in this episode (still upset over him trying to take advantage of unsuspecting receivers of Connie's email, seemed very out of character). For me, the only flaw was Mitch. I don't know, but for me, the acting seemed a little off.

Thoughts:
-I thought Connie and Mitch both agreed that it wasn't God's will for them to get married then? Not to get married at all? So there could've been a chance, but I think the writers just were looking for a way to calm down Connie/Mitch shippers. Mitch's return made sense in the context of the episode.
-This episode was hands-down the funniest episode this season. I actually enjoyed the Jones and Parker Detective Agency. Was this because they had a better case to solve, better dialogue, or a hilarious Penny assisting? I'm not sure, but it worked this time. I also liked this line: "I am here to make a...what do you call...CITIZEN'S ARREST!" "Citizen of what country?" Ten points to Kathy Buchanan/Paul McCusker! Wooton trying to eat healthier was somehow amusing, and the Maureen/Eugene kick was also funny.
-The dramatic scenes were executed wonderfully, although I don't think Mitch would have been that insensitive to keep saying things like "She's the best."
-Loved how the title also alluded to the old cast interacting with the new cast. This episode was not something blue, it was something true, and the cast did a great job as an ensemble in this one. Penny brings something new to Odyssey which feels refreshingly Odysseyian at the same time, and I'm glad that she's become a regular...but if she and Wooton get together as a couple, I WILL RETRACT THAT STATEMENT.
-Katie Leigh and Kimmy Roberson deserve Avery nods, and you could say the same for Andre Stojka and Dan Hagen, even though they had small roles.
-Whit's been playing the role of comforter all album...(Jason, Eugene and Katrina, the sweet old lady from Mistaken for Good, and Connie) and handling it with whit and wisdom...

Great episode. Odyssey is officially back, thanks to Album 55 and the writing. Hope Album 56 keeps Odyssey on an upward curve...now all we need is the return of pre-hiatus Wooton, character development for Wooton and Connie, and the knowledge of WHAT HAPPENED TO HAND UP AND HOW DID JASON GO FROM "RETIRING" TO BACK IN THE FIELD? My favorite episode of the season after Sgt. York.

Review by Woody (Town of Odyssey)

The episode seemed rather pointless since it's just "Mitch comes back, breaks Connie's heart by marrying someone else, and leaves to marry Maureen." When we begged for Mitch to return, we were NOT asking for an official break-up. We were asking for them to get back together. I admit the plot-twists were awesome, but I really wish they had made Maureen actually be a criminal. Or at least draw it out for an album or two(Mitch keeps dating Maureen, while Connie and everyone at Whit's End considers her a criminal, and when Jason comes to Odyssey after "The Labyrinth" he proceeds to arrest her, then discover she is an FBI agent). It would make for a great cliffhanger at the end of an album. The Connie and Whit scene near the end was great, I admit that. It seems Andre Stoijka is finally starting to become the Whit we all know and love. Also, at the very end, when Mitch leaves Connie yellow tulips, I noticed a major slip-up on the part of the writer. It was not Mitch, but Rodney who gave Connie the yellow tulips. Mitch never knew about the yellow tulips!!! At the beginning, I was excited to see Mitch return, but was disappointed when the only reason he showed up was to break Connie's(and us fans') heart. It's a waste to give up the perfect man for Connie. To destroy our hopes for Connie and Mitch once was bad enough... but to do it again? I loved the plot twists, and was(quite literally) jumping up and down when Eugene, Wooton, Penny, Matthew and Emily discover that Maureen is a criminal, but was crushed when Mitch told Connie that she was an FBI agent. Overall I say, the plot twists were great, but finding out that there is no hope that Mitch and Connie will never get married was perfectly heartbreaking.

I liked this episode as a follow up to Part 1. I am not a Connie/Mitch fan, so was not hoping for a romantic ending. I thought Wooton taking his role as the substitute groom seriously was hilarious. I loved the interaction between him and Connie, and I used to not be much of a Wooton fan. I think I read that Katie Leigh and Jess Harnell have worked together before and I think you could feel that "old" chemistry there. The only thing that bugged me was that I thought he was supposed to be dating Penny and was suprised she suggested him for the pictures. I loved Whit´s talk with Connie at the end and also Chris´wrap up for those fans that were hoping for a different ending. And while I liked this episode as a wrap up of part 1, I did not like at as the last episode of the album. I think Child´s Play should have follwed Mistaken for Good because they advance the "story of Odyssey" (Eugene and Katrina coping with infertility), followed by Something Old, Something New which takes place in Odyssey but other than confirming Connie´s current singleness (Still hoping for a serious positive relationship for her), does not really advance the town storyline. I think Sgt. York would have been a much better album conclusion. I can´t wait to get my CD album so I can upload it to the computer and rearrange the episodes to my liking.

That being said, I think this album as a whole is one of the best since the relaunch. It would be a tough call to have to either choose this one or The Green Ring Conspiracy....

I have mixed feelings about the episode, but overall, I have to give it a positive rating. They finally brought Mitch back, after 9 years of making us wait! I was ten back then and they told us he'd be gone for two years. By the time I hit 15, I gave up hope. Now days, anyone in the target age would have been three when Mitch was first on the show, (Wow I feel old) so I didn't think they'd ever bring him back in. I'm still not sure it was entirely necessary to bring him back, but personally, I'm glad anyway.

I never wanted Connie and Mitch to get married, even back then, so I'm actually pretty happy with the way things ended up. I think this was perfect. Connie finally has the closure she, and we as fans, needed. After years of wondering if they should have gotten together, here's our answer.

It was a valuable lesson, and one I needed to hear right now after finishing my first year of college and wondering if I went to the right school. The characters were great, everyone was well used. Mitch seemed a little too cold, but I think that's alright. If he was too nice, we'd all be even more upset that he and Connie don't end up together.
