Buck And...!?

Post

So, for those of you who have not listened to 58, you may not want to click the spoiler below. It's not a big spoiler, but it may blow your mind if you're a big shipping person.. which would make sense since you're here.
Buck and Jules! Are we pleased? Personally, I'm absolutely fine with letting go of my dear Buck and Emily. After all, it's lovely to imagine Emily and Mathew getting together. I melted the moment Jules started talking about what gentleman Buck is on that walk. But do they really have any particular characteristics that lend themselves to each other? We know relatively little about them yet.

Now get rid of that toothpick and talk it up!

I'm not sure if they have characteristics that would really complement each other at this point in time. Considering the fact that Jules has quite a few issues to work through even in terms of basic morality, I think she'd be more of a detriment to Buck's character development than anything; conversely, Buck has some instabilities in his own life that don't really make him a very stable person to help support Jules as she grows. They both need people who are more stable to contrast their own shakiness, I think.

That being said, the idea of them together is an interesting one, even though to me they seem like two people who are close friends and want to stay that way rather than being romantic partners. I enjoy their dynamic, if nothing else; they're not that different from each other, and I think their character arcs could be very nicely reflective of each other if the writers continue to use them both (and I hope they do).

Good points, but it seems like they could learn together. Fall together, pick each other up.

Also, Buck was never truly astray, in a sense. He only did things he considered acceptable due to Mr. Skint's "survival" philosophy. Now he's decided that philosophy is wrong, he will live by his principles, just like he lived by his incorrect principles before. So it seems like Jules couldn't harm him, and he could help her.

Ya, I think I like the idea! Jules would have to soften a bit for Buck. And the new Buck... Is just different but I guess jail... I don't know what to think :?

That's true. I just don't get the romance vibes from them, you know? It's one of those gut feelings, I suppose. But to each their own. :) I'd just like to see personal growth from both of them individually first before they start helping each other out, if that's the case.

Anyway, Jules isn't even in Odyssey not that I wouldn't be surprise if she went on vacation in Odyssey.

Mehhh. I reeaaally didn't like them together, even as friends. It just seemed kinda forced to me, and I honestly think neither of them are ready for a romantic relationship.

Shame on you, filthy Emily lover. I would actually argue that the Emily and Buck combo was a heck of a lot more forced, and predictable, than Jules and Buck. They really did have some chemistry in the few scenes they were in together (Buck and Jules, of course. Not Buck and Emily.), and the odd part is that, in many ways, they're polar opposites. Buck is a bad boy trying to be good, while Jules is, in many ways, a "good" girl trying to be bad. Buck has a downhome, Southern personality, whereas Jules sounds like a hip, modern stereotypical teenager. However, as the old saying goes, opposites attract. But I think the biggest reason that I'm a loyal shipper of Bules is that it would be unlike any other romantic relationship AIO has ever done, in that Jules was not created for Buck, or vice versa. There would be some fresh contrast between the two of them that was never present with Connie and Mitch, Eugene and Katrina, Jason and Tasha (or Monica, for that matter), or even some of the kid couples like Barrett and Priscilla. For that reason alone, I'm begging you Odyssey, please keep both of them on the show, and around each other often.

^Basically this. The two of them have good chemistry and it'd be interesting to see them in a relationship.

*ahem* When did I ever say I liked Emily/Buck? *thinks* Hmmm...never!

As with many ships, I could warm up to the idea if the AIO team does it right. It also might have to do with the fact I'm not terribly fond of Jules in Album 58, whereas Buck went up quite a few notches in my character rankings. I still retain that Jules has a long way to go before she's ready for any real romantic relationship, and I'd honestly be disappointed if they got together before she's worked some of her issues out. If she were to come back to Odyssey again for a vacation, I'd expect the writers would use it as a way for her to connect with Connie and possibly win back her trust, or to work out her issues with her mom and dad, not to start dating Buck.

I'd like to get nitpicky here and say that this is not the first time on the show that two people who eventually fall in love were not created specifically for that purpose. Trent was not intended to be Mandy's eventual husband before "The Present Long Ago" revealed that he was, and Jack and Lucy weren't ever teased as potential love interests before "The Triangled Web". I will agree on the contrast, even though I don't really ship Buck and Jules. I'd be fine with it either way, although like I said, I'd like some development in both their characters in ways that are independent of a romance.

Fine, fine. I will acknowledge that your precious Trent and Mandy weren't completely constructed by the AIO team to be together. =P Still, you can't deny that Bules is an odd yet weirdly satisfying combination. The more I think about it, the more I want them to get married. Like... now. \:D/

They are my preciouses. \:D/ Jack and Lucy, of course, were certainly not predestined to be together by the team, but with Genni marrying Donald, it was only a matter of time. ;)

However, I can, in fact, deny that Buck and Jules are satisfying as a romantic pair, because they're not that satisfying to me yet. ;) They come across to me as close friends right now, and I'd honestly love for them to develop a unique friendship before even a hint of romance enters the story. The real appealing thing about Buck and Jules, whether as friends or as a couple, is that they sound so much more natural together; I agree with you, CT, in that they seem much more organic in their interactions than Buck and Emily did...which, if you think about it, is probably not entirely unintentional, given the differences in the natures of the two relationships.

All I really want for Buck, ultimately, is that he be happy, ship or no ship. :(

I agree totally that Emily and Buck was forced. I wanted to skip by that scene each time I have listened to GRC. Seems like Connie and Mitch's first episode with no chemistry and more day dreaming.
Buck and Jules actually do both have something in common. They want the people of Odyssey to like them. Jules not at first but toward the end.
Jules also it seems like is somewhat like Connie. Just something to throw out there.

I noticed that too. She's almost exactly what Connie was before she became a Christian (though Jules is naturally internet-savvy). I actually like this idea, as AIO hasn't really had a rebellious character in forever. So, I feel horrible saying this, but I hope that Jules doesn't become a Christian anytime soon, as that would really just make her a Connie clone.

But, um... sorry. Let's get back on topic. Who thinks that AIO will actually take my advice and pair Buck and Jules up?

Well.... of course.... that is the only scene they have had together....
Jules will probably become a Christian in a few albums.

I hope Jules doesn't become a Christian. Like CT said, it would make her too much like Connie.
And I think if Jules and Buck got together it would pave the way for a triangle with Emily, Jules, and Buck. So I'm for 'Bules' or whatever this is being called.
I never really liked the idea of Emily and Buck being together. Emily seemed a bit young for him.
