The Meltsner family

Hidden in all this dust lies the hypothesis of many AIO fans. What do you feel is sure to happen, and what should stay buried? Chris says keep listening, we say speculate.

The Meltsner family

Post

So, as we all know, Eugene and Katrina can't have children. But should they? Ok, this is hard to explain but should they have a baby? A miracle child you might say. I've just been thinking about that and how it would change the family dynamic. I've also been thinking about the possibility of fostering another child. What does everyone think? Specifically on if Eugene and Katrina were to have a baby. Would it be too confusing and complicated at this point, because of Buck? Or could it work? Please, discuss!

Right now, I think they just need to focus on Buck and his role in the family, especially since we still see he's not sure about what said role is, and I don't think Eugene and Katrina are entirely sure either; they're still getting used to each other, I think. If they added such a big thing like that, it would really make the storylines feel cluttered. If it was done well, I think it might work, but it would still feel like there's too much going on. We already have the plot line of Jules with Connie, Jules' romance with Buck, Buck with the Meltsner family, etc..

Aye, I agree with Autuman, mainly. Narrowing in on the difficult issue Katrina faces would be distracting and distressing, probably unnecessary, as it's been mentioned several times. For now I'm interested in how Buck comes accustomed to their household and habits.
I know many fans feel it isn't fair Katrina and Eugene are unable to have a baby, though I think Buck's position has been challenging enough. The writers have explored Eugene's insecurities and the similarities, if any, between the teenage boy and him. Their relationship has matured the older of the two, helping him to be more compassionate and emphasize. We've also witnessed Katrina's motherly side come out and the quirks of her personality.

Having an infant definitely changes the dynamics in a household, though a teenage boy with a dark past provides more entertainment and opportunities to teach lesson about trust, and redemption. Two of my favourite themes.

I agree with Autumnal as well.

Eugene and Katrina have their hands full just watching after Buck, and I think it would be too much for them to watch over a baby and Buck at the same time. Buck is still prone to falling back into his past life, and that's why Eugene and Katrina are his "guardians"; to keep him from falling back. Also, if Eugene and Katrina did have a baby, it is pretty likely that Buck would feel jealous that he wouldn't have their full attention anymore.

I think that AIO should stick with Buck as the Meltsner's only child......for right now. At least until he has his life/direction figured out.

I actually disagree (with the statement that Buck would be jealous), I know from personal experience that a new baby in the family can make someone ever-patient, and ever-kind. This happened to an acquaintance of mine, and it happened to me. When there's someone else to take care of and look out for your whole personality tends to strengthen in selflessness, there's no room for anything else when you have an infant in the house.

That said, I'm not sure I can see it for Odyssey at the moment. It would make a good fanfiction...hm....

Yeah, but I could see Eugene and Katrina giving their birth child more attention and Buck might feel like he couldn't be as special as the new baby, or something.

Of course! We can't just go and be all realistic in our theories. I mean, how silly would that be?

Does anyone else ever wonder if Buck will continue aging? In the Green Ring Conspiracy, he was fourteen, and just recently, he turned sixteen and got his driver's license recently. Would it be better if he slowly got older, over the span of the next few albums, or if he stayed this age for a while longer?

Hm. Yeah, I've wondered that myself. My guess is that he'll stay sixteen for a while. Assuming he was fifteen from about GRC to Up in the Air. But I wouldn't be surprised if he kept aging. Depending on if he's officially adopted eventually, I could definitely see him going to Cambel College, and given that Eugene teaches there, the writers could do a lot with their relationship. It probably also depends on how Buck and Jules' relationship plays out, and if she stays in Odyssey.

I know that is is a somewhat old topic, but I've done a bit of research around this and here's what I found
first off, if they've gone to a doctor, that means they have tried to have one, (at least twice) and realized something was wrong. based on their moods in To Mend or Repair, the problem lies with Katrina, which is actually good, as there are many problems which are all repairable in time (even just a change in diet). they can't not ever have a baby, just that it may take a bit longer, hence a possible double meaning of the title "to Mend or Repair" (Katrina is upset about her condition and Eugene is trying to take her mind off of it, while delaying his own reaction). my guess is the addition of Buck will help the writers work out how Eugene and Katrina will grow as parents, ready for them to have one of their own.
if there's two things that need to happen before Odyssey Ends, it's Connie's marriage and Katrina having a baby.
