Recently I've been thinking about the different eras of AIO, based (in a highly unscientific manner) on character development, characters used, episode themes, etc. This is based somewhat on a current perspective, not the way it might seem to someone who lived through it. I would split it into 5 eras:
Era 1: I think Family Portraits could be included with this era. I'm not exactly sure about where the first era ends and the second begins. Let's say that the first one ends at whatever time they stopped having Chris's intro discussion at the beginning. I don't have many early albums, so I can't pinpoint the exact episode. Whenever it started to seem like they had figured out what they were doing.
Era 2: From that episode through volume 20
Era 3: Volumes 21 through 34. I'm not entirely certain on this part, actually. I feel like there should be a split in here somewhere.
Era 4: Volumes 35 through 50. I think Novacom can be included with the years up to the hiatus.
Era 5: Volumes 51 through the present. No duh.
When I refer to an album, I'm really referring to the time period within that album. If some episodes are out of order, e.g. BTV:Redeeming the Season in album 48, they should be included with other episodes of their era, not with the era of the rest of the album.
What do you guys think? I'm sure there will be differences of opinion on this.

I did a topic similar to this a while back called "The Golden Age of Odyssey" where I made even more divisions. These are generally good, even if they might be a bit broad.

I think you can divide the albums into three eras.
1: Hal Smith
2: Paul Herlinger
3: Andre Stojka
Because each actor shows a different side of Whit if you know what I mean?!

Paul Herlinger was the best Whit.
I think that Era 4 is probably the best. Or maybe Era 3 is best.

Yeah, I didn't really feel justified to go too far with this, because I've only heard most of the episodes once or twice. I have albums 43-58 as well as a smattering of other stuff here and there, so that's the time period I'm most familiar with.ArnoldtheRubberDucky wrote:I did a topic similar to this a while back called "The Golden Age of Odyssey" where I made even more divisions. Agreed on both. Era 4 is definitely my favorite. I love listening to those episodes.Novatom wrote:Paul Herlinger was the best Whit.

I wonder if you could separate the eras out by opening theme songs? Actually, I think I'm subconsciously doing that already. When the theme song changes, the whole episode has a different feel to it.

That's a good idea. Would you just have a poll, call them Theme 1, Theme 2, etc, and have recordings? How many different themes were there?Gooey98 wrote:I wonder if you could separate the eras out by opening theme songs? Actually, I think I'm subconsciously doing that already. To my understanding, there were 4 different themes. The original, the second around Album 13, IDK when the 3rd started, and the 4th is the current one. But there could have been five.Novatom wrote:That's a good idea. Would you just have a poll, call them Theme 1, Theme 2, etc, and have recordings? How many different themes were there?

This is true. Whenever I hear the begining of an episode I can aways tell what era it is from by the theme songGooey98 wrote: When the theme song changes, the whole episode has a different feel to it.
