Sports: "Johnson, Coyotes come back to take playoff game from Tigers"
McAllister Park--The Odyssey
Coyotes scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to nip the Crosstown
Tigers, 3-2, in a playoff game last night at McAllister Park. The hero was
Sam Johnson, who ripped a three run homer off Tiger pitcher Bruno Beltzer to
seal the victory.
Beltzer had shut down the
Coyotes for eight innings, largely due to the mysterious absence of Coyote
slugger Johnson, who did not enter the game until the seventh.
"Somebody stol his bat,"
Coyote coach Connie Kendall said after the game, "and he didn't think he
could hit without it. But as it turned out, I think he found out that the
secret to his success was not his bat, but himself."
Johnson's bat, his "secret
weapon," as he called it, was reportedly a bat once used by major league
home run hitter Lefty Grizzell. Johnson was not using t he bat when he came
to the plate in the ninth inning. With two outs and runners on first and
third, Johnson hit a 0-2 pitch over the left field fence.
The Coyotes will play the
Waynestown Woodpeckers in the second round of the playoffs on Saturday.
