Campbell College updates electronic
security system
Technicians have installed new security
software and hardware at Campbell College over the weekend in an effort to
make the college's data more secure, according to Frank Sedgwick, an
Information Technology coordinator at the college. The upgrade includes a
more powerful firewall and proxy server for the college's network and
website system.
While the college denies that the institution has been lax on security
measures, they have suffered intrusions by computer hackers over the last
few months. "We've had repeated problems with a hacker or hackers breaking
into the college electronically," said Officer Mark Maddox, the police
investigator assigned to case. "The new security systems should curb that."
Campbell College has had problems in the past with its electronic data. Many
students over the years have voiced their concerns that the computer system
is inadequate and remains outdated. Several professors have demanded that
the college keep up with technology. College representatives claim they are
working hard to expand the college technologically. An example of their
efforts, they claim, is the recently finished Thomas Greyson Memorial
Planetarium.
