AIO Takes to the Races

By | August 7, 2012

It’s a flight to the finish as Adventures in Odyssey makes its way up Pikes Peak on August 12, 2012. The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC) is the second oldest motor sports race in America, with 2012 as the 90th year of “Race to the Clouds.”

On August 12th, the race will feature 16 classes with nearly 200 competitors. One competitor, Jeff MacPherson (Bozeman, Montana), will participate in the race with his Adventures in Odyssey themed 1970 Porsche in the Pikes Peak Open.

Posted on Adventures in Odyssey’s Facebook page on July 23rd, MacPherson’s car was still under construction, but getting closer to stylish finished look.

According to the PPIHC:

“The race is run on a 12.42 mile course with 156 turns that begins at 9,390 feet and finishes at the 14,110 foot summit of America’s Mountain; Pikes Peak! As the drivers climb toward the summit, the thin air slows reflexes and saps muscle strength. The thin air also robs engines of 30% of their power at the summit. Competitors and vehicles must be in top shape simply to finish…let alone win! … There is no other race course in the world like the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. That is why it attracts race crews that are willing to spend several hundred thousand dollars and months of preparation to compete for the right to be the King of the Mountain.”

This is a great promotion opportunity for the Adventures in Odyssey brand in the race’s 90th year. The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb was re-scheduled due to the Waldo Canyon wildfires which so devastatingly ravaged outside Colorado Springs in June 2012. MacPherson’s race car is definitely unique, and he wanted AIO to be featured on his car.

Gary Locke, artist for the Adventures in Odyssey brand, created an illustration of Jeff MacPherson and Whit speeding through Pikes Peak’s rocky terrain.

The Adventures in Odyssey car also features Focus on the Family and Chick-Fil-A’s logo.

It’s evident that we’ve reached an era in which Adventures in Odyssey is so well known that big events are beginning to happen. If you’ll recall, Adventures in Odyssey made its way to outer space with astronaut Terry Virts as he traveled to the International Space Station on February 8, 2010 [see our 2010 Timeline page].

According to Focus on the Family:

“Racing and AIO fans can meet him – and see the AIO car in person – this Friday, Aug. 10, at the Fan Fest celebration, where MacPherson will be on hand to sign AIO posters at the Focus on the Family booth. Kids can also audition live for Adventures in Odyssey’s “Get in the Show” contest at the Focus booth for a chance to win a part in an AIO episode … Fan Fest will take place this Friday, Aug. 10, from 5 – 10 p.m., Downtown Colorado Springs at Tejon St. between Colorado Ave. & Bijou St.”

Big things are happening, fans. Stay tuned as we bring you more exciting events in the life of Adventures in Odyssey! You never know what adventure lies ahead!
